Resumo:
Analyzes current Latin-American academic journals of Library and Information Science. From 1997 to 2001, 50 journals published in 13 different countries were identified. Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico published 60 of these journals; of which 74 were less than ten years old, and 5 were between 26 and 30 years old, indicating that these journals are well established in the field. Library associations and schools of library science with no graduate courses published 58 of them. Schools which offered graduate courses (Master and Ph.D.) and research centers jointly published 11 journals. Since these journals are most familiar with the doxa of the field, they will usually be perceived as the best journals by academia. These journals are usually published semi-annually, and only a reduced number of them are indexed by bibliographic databases. However, INFOBILA indexes and disseminates most of them. Also identified was a tendency by journals to become electronic publications with 20 journals offering full text, 4 providing abstracts, and 4 content index
